Byland’s Battle: celebrate history at Sutton Bank's anniversary event

Find out more about the Battle of Byland anniversary event at Sutton Bank National Park Centre

Chris Pye, Centre Manager of Sutton Bank National Park Centre spills the secrets of our next Battle of Byland event!

"Every time I take a stroll to the ‘Finest View in England’ at Sutton Bank, I’m reminded of the incredible history that surrounds this iconic landscape. From the ancient Iron Age hillfort on Roulston Scar to the Second World War dummy airfield just to the north, there’s no shortage of historical significance. But perhaps the most dramatic moment in this area's rich past is the Battle of Byland, fought in 1322—a battle that saw none other than Robert the Bruce emerge victorious.

"It’s remarkable to think that over 700 years ago, this very spot witnessed such a monumental event. Robert the Bruce, fresh from his victories in Scotland, led a Scottish force to what would become a decisive victory over King Edward II’s depleted English army. The terrain around Sutton Bank played a crucial role, as it was the spot the English army chose to position themselves ready to battle the Scots!

"In 2022, the surge of interest around the battle’s 700th anniversary brought fresh attention to this pivotal event. Thanks to the groundwork laid by passionate volunteers like Harry Pearson, the battle’s legacy continues to grow. Our funded ‘Raiding the Bank’ project is now in full swing, diving deep into the military history of the area through archaeological surveys and new interpretative resources. This project aims to highlight not only the Battle of Byland but the broader military significance of Sutton Bank, spanning centuries of conflict and strategy.

"We’re also thrilled to be hosting another Battle of Byland anniversary event on Sunday 13 October! Fancy trying your hand at archery? Ever wanted to witness medieval arms and armour demonstrations? Or maybe you’re keen to explore the archaeological test pits and learn about the layers of history hidden beneath your feet? There will also be medieval music, ale tasting, falconry, free guided walks with local historian Harry Pearson to the Byland monument and a host of children’s activities to keep the whole family entertained.
